Handbells
The ringing of English Handbells is a longstanding tradition at Colborne. The bells were originally bought in the 1960s and, at the time, were the only handbells in London.
Today we own a 4 1/2-octave set of Schulmerick handbells and a 3-octave set of Suzuki hand chimes. The Colborne Street Ringers play in the service 3 or 4 times during the year, and practise Wednesday evenings in the 5 or 6 week period leading up to a performance. In addition, bells are often used to enhance certain hymns or achieve a special effect.
In Colborne Street United Church's music ministries we seek to do as the scriptures exhort us in Colossians 3:16.
"Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God."
For this reason we seek a blended worship approach where, like the roots of a tree, we honour the ancient tradition of singing psalms, like the trunk of that tree we embrace the hymns, and just like the branches with the growth of new leaves we explore the new music emerging in churches today.
Chancel Choir
The Chancel Choir is for everyone 18+ years. We participate each week in worship in the leading of hymns and psalms as well as offering regular anthems. The choir is made up entirely of volunteers. All are welcome to join in the great music-making and fellowship that this group offers. Rehearsals are on Thursdays from 7:30 - 9:15 p.m. and Sundays from 9:45 - 10:15 a.m.
